Background
Rolling-contact fatigue (RCF) is defined as a failure or material removal driven by crack propagation caused by the near-surface alternating stress field... RCF is also commonly observed in gears, camshaft mechanisms, and rail-wheel contacts and is considered being the most unavoidable failure in the rolling contacts.
RCF 1 Rolling Contact Fatigue Machine
The RCF 1 Rolling Contact Fatigue Machine is a modified version of the TE 74S Two Roller Machine, with the drive to upper roller removed. The upper roller specimen is reduced to a simple cylindrical roller running in rolling contact with a driven lower roller.
RCF 1 is designed for performing rolling contact fatigue tests under conditions of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, with well filtered lubricant feed, thus minimizing the potential for adhesive, abrasive or oxidative wear or surface propagated micro-pitting; the intended failure mechanism is thus by pressure generated, sub-surface propagated, flaking or spalling.

RCF 2 Rolling Contact Fatigue Machine
The RCF 2 is a cut-down version of the TE 92HS Rotary Tribometer, the key change being the removal of the friction torque measuring arrangement and the clutch assembly used for low speed sliding four ball tests. The RCF 2 machine is used only for fatigue testing in the high speed configuration with rolling contact test adapters.
Various well established test adapters are available, including the standard rolling four ball test adapter used for generating surface propagated micro-pitting failures, a cone on angular contact bearing adapter and a thrust ball bearing on disc adapter, which produces rolling with contact spin.

- Contact Configurations: Rolling Four Ball Adapter
Cone on Angular Contact Bearing Adapter (Bearing 7206)
Thrust Ball Bearing on Disc Adapter (Bearing 51208)
Roller Thrust Bearing on Disc Adapter (Bearing 81208 TN)
Back-to-back Bearing Adapter (Bearing 7209 x 2) - Rotational Speed: 100 to 10,000 rpm

RCF 3 Rolling Contact Fatigue Machine
The RCF 3 tester provides a three roller test configuration similar to the GE Polymet machine. Two large diameter rollers are loaded diametrically opposed against a small diameter rod specimen. The two rollers are driven with high speeds while at the same time substantially eliminating potential slip in the roller contacts. The RCF3 is designed for performing rolling contact fatigue tests under conditions of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, with well filtered lubricant feed, thus minimizing the potential for adhesive, abrasive or oxidative wear or surface propagated micro-pitting.
Technical Specifications
- Contact Configurations: Flat Roller on Flat Roller (Line Contact)
- Flat Roller on Crowned Roller (Elliptical Contact)
- Maximum Load: 21 kN
- Loading Rate: 50 N/s
- Maximum Lubricant Supply Temperature: Ambient to 150°C
- Change-over Filters: 3 micron
- Test Roller Diameter: 20 mm to 50 mm
- Diameters: 200 mm to 250 mm

RCF 4 Rolling Contact Fatigue Machine
The RCF 4 Rolling Contact Fatigue & Bearing Friction Rig is used for both endurance fatigue testing and precision bearing frictional loss measurement. Two test assemblies are available: combined radial and axial loading and bi-directional axial loading. Load is applied by means of servo controlled pneumatic bellows with force transducer feedback.
An in-line torque transducer is provided for accurate friction measurement, with a maximum permissible speed of 10,000 rpm. An integral lubricant service module is also fitted as standard incorporating a sump tank.

RCF 5 Rolling Contact Fatigue Machine
The RCF 5 machine is designed to run the standard thrust ball bearing on disc rolling contact fatigue test, using either a 51208 or 51305 sized thrust bearing race and balls. The machine is floor standing and designed to be installed either as a single unit or as a multi-unit installation.
Each test station incorporates a PLC, with inputs via touch-screen, for independent control of motor speed and test assembly temperature, plus a vibration sensor and adjustable level trigger circuit, for detecting rolling contact fatigue and stopping the motor. Load actuators are connected to a common pneumatic supply, with a manually set precision regulator and a pressure transducer calibrated for load measurement.
Technical Specifications
- Motion Rotary
- Axial Load: 200 to 10,000 N
- Thrust Bearing 51208 or 51305 (user to advise at time of order) mm
- Speed 30 to 3,000 rpm

RCF 6 Rolling Contact Fatigue Machine
The RCF 6 machine is designed to run the standard three ball on rod rolling contact fatigue test geometry, in which three balls are loaded against a rotating rod specimen, by applying an axial force across two taper bearing cups, mounted above and below the three balls.
The rotating rod is mounted in a collet and the rod position relative to the ball specimens is adjusted to allow multiple tracks to be run on a single rod sample. The machine is designed as RCF 5 tester with an additional vibration sensor for detecting rolling contact fatigue and stopping the motor. Load actuators are connected in parallel to a common pneumatic supply, with a manually set precision regulator and a pressure transducer calibrated for load measurement.
